Same name?

Right, so people have said it's not possible to have the same name for 2 characters, but...

yes, the l's are not capital I's, but here's the interesting stuff.
I did that then was surprised, so tried to do it do a character from another account, then it said that name was already taken. Ok, so this led me to believe that you can make the same name for characters on the same account? Can someone confirm that?
Well anyways, I was in my fighter fighting a corsair gunboat and I died. So I hit the re-spawn button to load up on bots and bats and log off. But then when I do hit respawn, I'm suddenly my bomber and not the fighter anymore...
So what's going on?
