PERSONAL HISTORY:
Roger was born from the illegitimate relationship of Lord Abraham Clowde of Sandwich, a distant relative of the Steiners by mother's line, and one of his mistresses, in one of the many comfortable rooms of Sandwich Estate. It was clear that he could never inherit his father's title, even without mentioning the staggering number of his elder, legitimate half-brothers and sisters, and even more illegitimate ones. His father was, as one may guess, inefficient at controlling some of his carnal urges, but he was also very religious and patriotic, so he always did everything he could to keep his children well-dressed, well-educated and well-fed, despite the costs, as some sort of a repentance for his sins.
Roger grew up on the estate and rarely went out. He was relatively of sedentary character and did not like sports, although he sometimes played marbles with his siblings. He had private professors and achieved decent grades, at least for the amount of care and effort he had invested. He did not receive the highest degree of education, but he was prepared well enough to find employment and cease being dependent on his father's shrinking income. His father then bought him a freighter, sent him off to space and secured his room, which he no longer needed, for another child. This freed his father from many expenses.
Some people like fast ships, some like gambling, but Roger did not have a special hobby. He was specially bored, and that acquired him a habit rather than a hobby, or even an addiction, of special proportions -- eating. That is why he needed a very long time to pile up some notable capital. His Clydesdale, the "Ant", was specially modified so that the cockpit space was expanded on the account of the cargo space, and a part of the remaining cargo space always had to be filled with luxury food, so there was less cargo that could be shipped. A considerable amount of those profits would be spent on the next reserve of luxury food. It took Roger more than two decades, and a weight loss of about 20 kilograms, to finally replace the "Ant" with a second-hand Serenity-class, the "Albion".
The Serenity-class was considerably larger than the Clydesdale-class, which Roger found very convenient. He did not have to make any modifications, there was a lot of cargo space and there was space for a crew who could serve him, so he did not have to do everything on his own. He made the ship his home and he never left the spacious bridge, which he made his personal quarters.
However, the crew did not like to be servants. Especially not with those wages. Namely, Roger only did shipments when he ran out of food, so they were not regular and, as a consequence, the crew was not regularly paid, nor richly. Roger spent most of the profit himself. Having already got bored of regular food, he would spend hours browsing the Neural Net for all sorts of the oddest, and most expensive, specialties in Sirius to try out. He saw the crew as no more than pawns at his service. Resentment among them was slowly rising.
The turning point was the day when Roger discovered that he could no longer pass through the doorway. He was stuck in the bridge. He needed either someone to widen the doorway, or someone to bring him supplies. The crew refused to do either of this and instead offered an ultimatum: they would either all quit and leave him there until he burns enough calories to be able to exit, or he would transfer the ship to the Armed Forces. The reasons for this were partially patriotic, but mostly practical, as Merchant Navy transports were always and hectically active, and wages were fairer and more regular, as opposed by capitalist companies. Roger refused and fired the crew. He promptly sent a request for help to his father, but the only reply he received was that his letter was deleted as spam. His father could not remember him, either because he was old, or because he had made a lot more Clowdes until that point or, more likely, because he was nearing bankruptcy.
Roger could not find a new crew, as many people had already heard the rumours about him. He had to recall his old crew and accept all of their terms. As a safety measure, the doorway was not widened, so that Roger would stay dependent on the crew.
He is currently serving the Merchant Navy. The "Albion" is usually tasked to transport inedible supplies, as the Command wants to make sure that all of it reaches the destination.
