Hitting cruise to catch up an afterburnering pilot

As I said, I don't know about the AFA guy..

but

we can argue for ages about "who left whom".

The situation in one explanation

4 Ships (KNF + AFA) are fighting 2 ships (BD + GC).

The GC thrusts away in one direction, while still under fire ( so you can't say he's leaving much), by the time he gets killed his pursuers are 10k away from you.

So they "ran" from you? Or you "ran" from them?

I would say neither, the fight got separated, so these two parties are not in a fight any longer and both sides can use cruise to come to the other one.

Except that is nothing like what actually happened, I was the BD who thrust away, not the CG, and the AFA guy was with me the whole time.

Before I ever hit cruise the AFA guy had cruised, z keyed, and shot at me while I was still on afterburner.

You were grouped with the AFA, you were never 10 k away, if you were 10 k away how could you catch up? You couldn't, right?

You were able to catch up because I was in afterburner, the AFA was with me, and you did a formation on him for 420 cruise, right?
