Bretonian Privateer

It was not uncommon for a privateer to use a personal private(hence, privateeer) vessel--though the military would usually provide support and possibly outfit it with weapons.

The privateer was meant to be self-supporting once equipped and spent most of his time in enemy territory and resupplying at allied or friendly foreign bases.

The C.S.S. Shenandoah--a commerce raider--spent almost a year at sea as did other vessels--resupplying in France and other nations.

There is a big naval history of privateers and as described above it would be very appropriate as a real life comparison.
