Mine is a strange tale though maybe not as strange as this new world i have awakened into.
Lets see it started for me around 250 to 300 years ago I am not real sure since i am having trouble adjusting to this new calender and dating system. The details of my prior life are uninteresting and would probably be boring to most of you.
One day close to the end of my former life i went to the Doctor for my annual physical and a few days later i got the call that eventually led me here. The Doctor had bad news REALLY bad news. Cancer the plague of my former era. Inoperable and extremely advanced. If i was lucky i had 1 maybe 2 years. Well at the time i was well off and being a huge science fiction buff i started looking into cryogenic stasis. The real thing not those loons who wanted to cut off your head after freezing you and hope that someday medical science would advance far enough to graft it onto another body (by the way just where would that body come from?). But honest scientific research with a likely chance of success. Hell my odds at living out the year were pretty thin so any reasonable chance was worth a shot and if it didn't work i couldn't be any more dead could i?
After about 8 months of searching and interviewing i found a young Scientist who was convinced that he had figured out how to cryogenically suspend a life and to bring that life back at a much later date. I told him what i wanted to do and even though he was sure he could do this he was hesitant. The laws being what they were back then he could have been charged with my death. But after talking to a very good lawyer and setting up a trust to fund his research for his lifetime and more (i may have been a bit modest when i said i was "well off") and setting up the rest of my assets into what looked to be promising though long term investments i went to sleep. When i awoke i was somewhat in shock to find that not only had i awakened in a vastly different world but that this world was not even the one i was born on.
I had been a museum piece for the kids and tourists to gawk at until a night watchman had accidentally compromised my stasis chamber. Faced with a situation not covered in any laws known to anyone i was revived and in the process cured of the cancer that would have killed me. After some legal wrangling i found that though i was not "well off" any more i was not flat broke either. I bummed around for a while not really fitting in anywhere but looking for something. Then i ran into a woman. Yeah yeah sooo cliche' she was unlike any woman i had ever met and once she had heard my tale she looked me in the eyes and said you my friend are an outcast if ever there was one. So now i am a part of something again and after a neural piloting upload and spending what assets i had i am now the proud owner of a sweet saber fighter and one day i will be well off again. For i like my brethren outcasts can be ruthless when needed.
