This is completely contingent on what type of defense you're desiring to accomplish. Standard weapon platforms are quite simple at this stage, and you likely wouldn't need my help, so I'm assuming you're looking for a more creative solution. From a diplomatic standpoint, it's best not to make others feel unwelcome by burning up people's hull, so a barrier of sorts would be ideal. The question I have for you is on what scale do you need? No matter what defense is put in place, it can be overrun by an amount of force, so I'd say the bigger the better.
