Ideas have been flying fast and furious, some good, some not. I have some niggling questions about some of the ideas being tossed about, mainly aimed at Cannon and the admins.
1. How long does it take to code, test, and implement an FLHook command? Yes, I know it depends on what the command does. Say you want to link buy/sell prices to a certain ID. For the sake of argument, an Ageira ID'd and tagged trader will receive a 10% higher sell-price for Gate/Lane Parts when selling at locations that buy said commodity?
Is this a simple "if tag=x and id=x, then sellprice=(sellprice*1.10)" or is it more complicated?
You (the community) can throw out ideas on FLHook commands all you want mainly because you don't code them, or what it takes to code them in terms of time, resources, and feasibility.
2. Another thing is all the ideas about SRP requests. SRP (or Special Role-Play, because not everyone knows the acronyms) to me seems to take a good amount of effort by our admin team. At the moment, the public's ability to view and judge SRP requests was (rightfully so) taken away, and the only idea we have they are being processed is from the reference thread (link not provided).
The "Admin-provided" IDs and rep-fixes and ships and .beams and blahblahblah all take time from the thirteen (13) admins that currently show up on the in-game splash-message. Of those 13, at any one time maybe 10 are fully active in administering Discovery (debatable at times, yes). Of those 10, how many different time zones are there? Of those 10, how much free time to they spend discussing sanctions, SRPs, and other administrator subjects?
It does take time to get a repfix for the invite-only factions on occasion...believe me I know.
This is not a call for more administrators, it is a call to the community to lessen their load, not increase it.
3. And this one is for the community. There are what, ten to fifteen THOUSAND registered users on the server, upwards of thirty-two thousand registered users on the forums. Granted, many of these forum users are never here, have left, whatever, but there's still a huge amount of people to administer and "control".
How are you (the community member) going to make Discovery a better place today?
-How are you, Capital Ship Captain, going to make Discovery a better place today? Are you going to stay out of a fight that isn't yours? Are you going to roleplay with a pirate and let him get away? Are you going to help that small Rhino or CSV doing missions with a few bats/bots?
-How are you, Gunboat/Bomber Pirate, going to make Discovery a better place today? Are you going to taunt the navy/police mercilessly with witty banter, then NOT engage? Are you going to scan that small freighter, and let it go on a whim? What about the transport convoy? What about asking for a few hundred thousand credits instead of a few million? What about asking for nothing at all except an ear to listen to your faction's story? Or allowing the target time to form a response?
-How are you, Lawful of all kinds, going to make Discovery a better place today? Are you going to escort that pirate out of your space without shooting them? Are you going to patrol a system other than your home system? Are you going to offer free-escort to those traders passing through your space?
-How are you, Traders of all size, going to make Discovery a better place today? Will you willingly give up a reasonable portion of your cargo/credits? Will you answer a pirate if he asks it of you, and not silently thrust away? Is there an escort you can hire?
It's not up to "them" to make Discovery better, be it Admins, Indies, Factionized players, pirates, traders, miners, outcasts, corsairs, nomad, order, or coalition.
It's up to us.
We, the players, make a difference.
So go make a difference. Make Discovery a better place today.
