Welcome to fighting Gallia bro.
Seriously, time for suggestions.
I have to concede that if the Gallic conflict and all of the rest didn't have an aspect of player driven influence, I'd have had no interest in story plot at all. Dev/Admin guidance though is also necessary.
Time to come to an accord on something here. At the same time, players perceive things as happening faster than they have to be. For now, yes, let a few pews go down, let it be RPable. Go from there. Probably safer to avoid too much player irritation, allow for some changes but nothing permanent until other situations are resolved. This does make it seem we have a little bit too much going on plot wise with Bretonia. If I were being told Bretonia is just being written to lose, I'd not be happy (especially because of this move). I can't support forcing the same thing on the Zoners. However, Gran Canaria is no Leeds, don't forget that either.
There are two arguments story wise: Bretonia must do this to help justify a comeback ~vs~ Bretonia shouldn't be in there until after a come back.
I don't support a retcon though, that breaks RP momentum and its better to salvage the current scenario (unless literally every faction leadership involved wanted it). Seizing the planet would be possible, and set up a new situation RP/PVP wise I'm sure many would be able to fit into, good or bad. From there though, it is only fair to allow for some challenge by the opposing side, with a chance to have a reasonable effect. But this will require everybody sort of knowing this is how it's going to be before moving forward. Every war should be like this.
It may not be a story advancement event, but these events should be validly RP'able, and the over all RP should be weighed in there when it comes time for big story advancement events (or there is not nearly as much fun in them).
I said this in a chat earlier that its like we have 2 sets of Gods here that conflict to control our timeline. (freedom vs determinism???) And us mortals are also trying to push for what we want. I just hope we can find a way to move forward and not have everyone stonewall everyone else until time just completely stops in Sirius. Or even worse, winds up looking like complete nonsense.
