I agree with you to some extent. Some engagement notices sound very forced indeed and I don't like them either. You need to keep in mind that, in the game, we communicate with written chat messages instead of something like a voice chat. It wouldn't be cool if you get engaged while typing, for obvious reasons.
Catbert posted a good example of an engagement notice, which doesn't require your character to talk awkwardly. I feel like this is a very good compromise.
