After gunboat was lost there was a need for that ship to be replaced. York, however, was not the man to do it. Still in shock for loosing trusted friend and his crew, he wasn't capable of search for new ship.
He still had his old beaten up heavy fighter that was more than capable of dealing damage of any who tried to attack Ouray base and for long time it did just that. For him it was enough, combined with marathon drinking streaks in the bar, one could say, more than enough.

Now, ten years later, York was more than ready to leave fighting to younger men. He made a plan that included a trusted smuggler on Barrier Gate station and heavily modified freighter with special compartments for contraband, increased hull plating and juiced up engines for extra speed.
Two years it took for him to establish connections with right people and to earn their trust.
But like many things in life it started by pure coincidence and bit of bad luck.
