I never complain without something to suggest instead. For these situations, NPC Battleships should be needed to take a planet. At least one, and during a time of war you should need a battleship to hold a planet.
Imagine if they put a Valor at Touluse to be a target, with HP of 1.5 bil and left it open for a week to see if it could be taken out in that time. Let repair ships work on these bases while this is happening. If it fails, instead of seeing the story as derailed, allow for another try within a month or a couple of weeks even. We can rp the attack was repelled, or rp the attack actually succeeded. I personally dont care if the lines are dramatically changing. If under that system people fought over the same planet or system for years, so what? People still do that anyways.
That way we'd have the ability to have normal story around the events and outcomes and still let those who participate determine the outcome. Even if most people want it fixed, most people would choose the side they hope will win. How does stuff like this not sound fun? During the event time sides could organize and schedule the big battles, yet pick away at the target in between (or for defenders, make use of the repair ships).
Add some superweapons again and we'd be set for some very interesting events.
These types of Events are not everybody's favourite.
