Depends on how you're presenting it, I guess. I'd like to think most reasonable adults can tell the difference between RP of sadistic characters with bad motives, and cruel RP done for the sake of being edgy and "evil". There's also the issue of powergaming which has always kinda prevented radical factions from, say, launching a full-scale biological or chemical warfare attack on a planet.

I wrote a story involving somebody being tortured with a particle accelerator a while back, which is probably the deepest I've gone into that kind of RP. My advice would be to make sure the dark and nasty parts serve a narrative purpose, and aren't just there for the purpose of being dark and nasty.

That having been said, as the leader of a chemical corporation specialized in hazardous materials, I can't deny I've considered what would happen if this faction ever got mad enough at something to engage in total war.
