There was the essentialism in Schultzky. He did not believe in the face of command, of an admiralty that must be immersed only in the symbolism of command and not the reality of each decision. A survivalist's numbers game. Men and women of stature towering above him in the command structure of the Rheinwehr had introduced the reality of the grave command-deck, where lone spectres lead entire crews on blind sequences of dependency. But that was a military; there was no command structure in the Unioners. Schultzky had a working suspicion that the captains who followed him did not do so because of any sense of obligation or duty, other than to the Unions themselves. No, Schutzky's creeping suspicion was that the captains toed the line simply because he held the biggest stick.

He was almost embittered. He could taste the dissilusion on his own tongue. Division and civil strife, from the highest orders of the state. Many of Schultzky's adoptive moment would fantasising over the end of the empire and the Cycle of Labour; the economic inevitability that birthed the Federal Republic ringing the lid of the funeral urn. The Unioners would gossip from the sidelines as they always did during the changing of the guard - even during the nomad war, the cells were only ever oppertunistic in the face of existential demise. Yet here they are - profiteering from the end. Perhaps the ends of ends - a war that had the potential to grind for years into bone marrow and dust had unstuck itself and stumbled into hope, far away in the ragged barrier that seperated Sirius from its second, less unenviable parasite; the ego of Charles DeFrance.

Schultsky wondered if his father's ship had burned in the first shot of the Gallic war, and not the Nomad crises, if he would have felt any differently.

Schultzky flashed up an image of the Vierlande pack and the compositions of their vessels. What he saw impressed him - two new hels rolled out of the shipyards, still gleaming before the oxidised thermal armour was applied to their bevels. The youth and veracity of the Vierlande pack had proceeded without his interference; alike his own ship, it was the old made new. Unlike the screaming spyglass under his feet, Vierlande was sustainable. Even the proteins in the bloodstains had been put to use.
