Before buying a new ship, transfer your ID back into your new ship in the "Internal Equipment" section. Make sure your ID allows you to fly your new ship.

Waypoint routes do not take jump holes into account. If you want to use them, set a new waypoint to each jumphole once you enter a new system.
Freelancer Companion is a program you can use as a database for nearly any information in the game. As a browser alternative, use the Nav-Map linked on top of the forum.
Official factions are a good way to get into the community. You don't have to fly alone all the time and other players are usually happy to answer your questions.
Ore trading is the most profitable way to make credits. Consult your local miner to get your hands onto precious ores.
Discovery's rules worth reading as many things aren't self explanatory. You should read them at least once.
Always stick to the rules of the ID you carry. If you want to switch playstyles, read up other IDs and change them.
