Can't load char/get disconnect after 5min, China

Hi guys, I have recently checked the web for freelancer stuff and stumbled upon this great community and mod.
I would really like to participate on the server for RP, I have watched the tutorials videos of "Sindroms, DiscoveryGC Gaming", but I have an issue.

1. We recently moved to China (of course I only found this mod afterward, head palm), so there is the great firewall of china and I am using ExpressVPN to get a connection to pretty much all the blocked websites and stuff. Sometimes, I am using a chinese VPN as alternative (both paid)

2. I am able to join the server pretty much all the time and have approx. 250ms latency (ping) to it, as shown on the server list. The lag is probably fine for me, since the server is probably long ways away Haikou, Hainan, China.
3 times out off 20 attempts, I am able to load a character and play normally for 5min or less. The game runs smooth, no lagging or any unusual performance issues during that time.

I join server (sometimes loading bar is being replaced by freelancer's please wait message. Then I am on the server and can see the character list. This is pretty stable until this point and works 90% of the time.

Then when I try to load a character, loading bar, then the please wait message, and sometimes it alternates between the two. Takes minute or two, then either joins in a rare case or usually just throws me back into the server list, where I can still see the server. If it failed and I try again, it will say "I'm sorry, but a connection could be established to that server...please wait".


I am running Win10, broadband is pretty stable with 90mbit download and 40mbit upload, usually under 70ms latency to the Singapore VPN server from ExpressVPN.
I have also disabled the AVG for some of the attempts, no real difference noticed.
I had even Firewall off to try that, even though freelancer.exe in on the list of allowed apps.
windows defender is off as well, but no change there, plus if it was one of these things, it wouldn't be an intermittent issue, right?!

I have sometimes issues with other games, in which case, most of the time the chinese VPN works fine, in this case the chinese one does not work at all.

My question now, is there something that I can do to fix the disconnects and even make it, so I can join with a better chance of success.

For instance, is there a max latency set for the server, that auto-kicks me, when it is reached?! I know some FPS shooters use that to enhance the overall quality of gameplay.

I have read something about a log file, that I can somehow show, but no idea how to do that, though.

I would be grateful for any hints or tip and tricks on how to get this to work.
