Project Nymeria’s Shield
Developed simultaneously with Project Holts Wrath as an alternative
method to defend Osiris class battleships from bomber swarms.
Whereas Holts Wrath focused on increasing the ability of an Osiris to deal
large amounts of precise damage in rapid succession to incoming bombers.
Project Nymeria’s Shield instead focused on deflecting incoming projectiles while also
softening up the enemy bombers so they’d be easier to take down for escorts.
With this approach, smaller escort wings would be required which in turn frees up more assets.
In order to realize this, the Science Division examined what defensive options were currently
present and proved to be effective, most noticeably; flak cannons.
Flak cannons in general were plenty effective at deflecting incoming shots,
and debris to use is plentiful in the Omicrons, unfortunately however they had little other benefit.
In order to optimize the flak cannons utility the Science Division started
experimenting with ionizing the shrapnel prior to firing the shots.
This concept brought some complications with it; ionizing the shrapnel in a manner that
wouldn’t affect ship performance alone required significant effort, everything from providing a
significantly isolating material to introducing and maintaining the current in the
shrapnel long enough to actually fire it off while still maintaining its potency against its target,
was closely examined and tested.
Eventually, several weeks after Project Holts Wrath finished, the first successful prototype
was finished and passed field testing. All the effectiveness of the original flak cannons was
preserved at the cost of a slight increase in power requirement.
In return however, not only did the shots deflect incoming projectiles,
they were also able of ripping shield bubbles to shreds thanks to the ionized charge the shrapnel carried.
Of the two projects, Project Nymeria’s Shield is more defense focused but harder to reproduce.
While it does not rely on dangerous to obtain materials like Iridium, the specific materials needed
to ensure the ionized shrapnel doesn’t affect the Osiris itself is relatively just has hard to come by and
cannot be found within the Omicrons.
