Or, who is he? I am Ernst Wojciechowski, my captain's first officer, as you would call the titles, and I write in the name of my captain, Olaf Fromm, because he cannot write.
My captain has never told me of his earliest days, but what he has told me (and what I managed to ascertain by listening and observation over the years, not all of which I am writing here with his knowledge, but all for his good) is that he worked in the mines on New Berlin until he suffered from gas poisoning at a young age. His rational faculties were declared unfit for work and he did not keep his job, and the disability pension was not sufficient to cover the cost of living and the cost of medication, which he had to take every day. So my captain joined the underworld and with it also a religious sect that was connected with the criminal gang. Here he met the Hessians. It was some thirty years ago that he joined the Movement. He was never known as a levelheaded, diplomatic or even reasonable person, but he would show his worth in any battle. At first he served as a gunner on Vogtland, then a battery commander on Freital, where he served until the battleship Hvannadalshnukur was built in, I believe, 818. I have not served here aboard from the start. I was originally a Rheinland Military officer, but I was captured and over time I understood where I was wrong and grew accustomed to my new ways and my new masters.
This ship was part of the Secondary Fleet, so we had a lot of autonomy in our modus operandi. We mostly operated in the Omega-15 system, now renamed to Omega-55, staging from Bornholm. The Schwerin Fleet was stationed there at the time and we made a number of surgical strikes against its ships or formations that we would manage to isolate or find isolated. My captain joined the Army itself at one time when he was offered the rank of hauptmann, but he retired at the time when Anna Heinrich became our commander, not due to old age nor due to disagreements, but because, I quote, "She is a daughter of Odin" and "The Army is in good hands".
The reason why my captain want to return to duty is because of the newly developed situation in Omegas and the crisis in Rheinland. He believes that the Army now "Needs every man, woman and hound" and he will happily provide his battle experience again. Also, we have been running out of mead and Rheinbier lately and some bonnethead threw all our musical instruments out of the airlock by accident.
