Chapter 1: Childhood
Part 1: An Underlying Danger

Christopher was born in 792 A.S. on the far edges of the universe, away from civilization. Life on Freeport 6 was not pleasant; due to the Tau-29's strategic location connecting Kusari with the rest of the Tau systems, pirate activity was thriving. There were many known pirate bases in the sector, however police presence was scarce; it's the Border worlds after all. The transports going in and out of Freeport 6 where constantly raided by pirate forces, and there was something that needed to be done about this. There were rumors being told of transports never showing up on their destinations, rumors talking about slavery; pilots that were never to be seen again. Fortunately, the station features a Biodome, so life on it is largely self-sufficient. However that does not mean it was built to survive under these circumstances...

Christopher grew up in an poor environment, his parents being capable fighter pilots working as part-time escorts for the mentioned cargo convoys; minimum wage, of course. Sometimes contractors wouldn't even pay them upon safely arriving to their destinations. Christopher's early years in life were harsh; food was scarce and his parents had to often give up their own rations to keep him alive. As Christopher grew up he slowly realized how harsh life for his family was all those years and how harsh it will continue being if they remain on this station.

"Father... can't you see that this life isn't going to get us anywhere? I..." Christopher sighs "it's only a matter of time before you run into an ambush that you will not manage to get out of. We have to leave this place father."

His father, a very old-looking man for his age; his face being a portrait of his tiresome life, looking away and avoiding conversation about the subject every time his 12 year old son tries to confront him.

Every week of Christopher's life after he started realizing that his family is doomed went by painfully slow, he had to start working on the station's engine rooms at this young age to bring at least some extra money back home. The engineers had him do ridiculous tasks and his days went by cleaning up pipes and mopping floors. Every evening he'd return to his family's quarters and come into his parents having an argument about the same thing... over.. and over.

"I told you there won't be any god damned transports anymore at some point. What did you think; that the Exports would continue sending people out here to bloody risk their lives? Didn't you know this moment will come one day?" His mother is heard shouting at her husband, as he remains quiet and looks down on the metallic floor.

Christopher runs into his room and remains there until he falls asleep.

Tonight, however, felt... different. He overheard a conversation between an engineer and a worker, just a few hours ago. The conversation echoes in his mind ever since;

The engineers chuckles in disapproval "You really heard that? Transports aren't coming our way because of the increased pirate activity? That's some fat gibberish if I've ever heard any, pirate activity has been like this for the past several decades, how much worse can it get?"

"I don't know, Lucas, but I've heard a lot of people looking to evacuate the station... they say big ships are coming our way. People have gone crazy man, they've been paying double fo-" The man pauses as he notices Chris looking at them "Hey, what's ya business here you rat? Get back to work." he shouts and Chris continues along mopping the lower decks.

Christopher didn't mention anything to his parents, but he has a bad feeling about this.

Another week of the same everyday life goes by, Christopher was made to work weekends now, which keeps him exhausted everyday. Today, however, it was told an accident took place in the engine compartment and he was called to stay home. The day was mostly eventful... until-

A large explosion can be heard throughout the entire station. Christopher and his parents get up and open the door to the main deck; what their eyes see, they cannot believe. Multiple capital-sized ships can be identified outside.
"The dome! Look!" says his mother as she points to the dome on the very left of the large deck windows. It was shot, presumably by the ships outside the station. Things slowly start to get a lot more dramatic; the hostile ships open fire, but this time their targets are the station's defense systems. One by one the station's turrets are shot down and soon the station is left defenseless.

Chaos has taken over the station's main deck, the poorest among the families aboard the station are terrified, rushing around trying to grab their belongings... what do they seek; perhaps a second chance, a new beginning.. but it is too late now. The wealthiest among the families were informed by their connections that a threat is approaching, and headed to the evacuation ships in a more organised manner. Huge sums of money were given by them to make sure there will be seats available on the evacuation ships when the time comes.

Christopher looks around frightened and then turns to his parents "Mom, what are we going to do?" his parents freeze at their son's question. They don't.. know
"We.. we will head inside and... yes... we will wait for help Chris, I'm sure someone has signaled for help, this is a very busy station... someone will notice. Come on, let's head inside" his father replies while stuttering, trying to keep himself calm for Christopher's sake. He doesn't believe a single word of what he just said; "There won't be any help arriving... there.. won't... be... Nobody cares about us" he thinks as he rushes inside with his family.

The family spent the next few hours in their compartment; Christopher is sitting at a chair looking at his parents, they are just near the windows and observing what is going on outside.

"Quick Chris, hide!" His father tells him trying to whisper. What seems like the shadow of a person can be seen approaching in the dim lights of the ship's hallways; the sounds of the person's metal boots echoing in the empty deck, slow, steady, determined. The man walks up to the center of the deck and slowly turns his head to look around him; in front of him are the quarters of all the families that haven't managed to escape this now-prison. The man cannot physically see anyone inside any quarters, yet somehow he knows the place is filled with civilians. A soldier, probably lower ranked than him seems to be rushing towards him; fully armed. "Commander, our scanners are still picking up massive heat signatures coming from the station, the majority of the station's population is still aboard, sir."

The man turns towards the soldier, takes a few steps in the same direction he came from and then comes to a stop hearing the soldier talking to him once more. "What should we do with the... people.. I mentioned.. sir?"The soldier says while slightly stuttering, possibly in fear. "Execute them. All. We have no time for prisoners." The man's footsteps echo once more and slowly fade away as he leaves the quarters. The soldier takes a glance around him, he sees the quarters. "There's... so many people here.. I... I'm sorry..." He says to himself as he looks straight out the window; three destroyers are facing the station. The soldier's hands tremble, his knees feel weak. He starts walking the same way back, a lot slower this time, seeing him one would assume he is heavily wounded, but the man has no sign of physical injuries on him. The sound of the large metal deck door is heard colliding with the floor, followed by the sound of a key-card and a code being inserted. The soldier leaves; the main deck is sealed. The commander is just outside the large door waiting for him. "Good job Lieutenant, you proved yourself today." The commander tells him in a deep, cold voice. And picks up his radio. "This is the commander speaking, all personnel aboard the station have been safely evacuated to our shuttles, the station is clear of civilians. You may fire upon the main decks when ready." He turns off his radio. "Sir, wait. There's people in there, how can you-" The Lieutenant is cut short by the man "He could be hiding in there Marcus god damn you. Are you gonna search every single part of that place for him? Remember the signal we followed, remember. Your. Mission." Marcus is frightened by the man's response, he looks down and keeps walking towards their frigate.

"Did they just... leave?" Christopher asks his parents. A few moments later, and before his parents can even respond, an energy beam can be seen being emitted from each of the 3 destroyers. The effect is too bright to even look up. "What is that dad? It's beautiful!" Not 5 seconds later, all the family saw was a very bright light followed by darkness, and the sound of thousands of screams being silenced in an instant.

Christopher's eyes open, he is dizzy and his vision is blurry. Everything around him looks...white; almost too white. It's hard for him to check out his surroundings as the lights on the ceiling are blinding him. "Mom...? Dad..? Am I... Is this a dre-"
