Karl Guderian is typical product of a family with strong military tradition. His ancestors were military officers and so does he. He was raised with strong sense of military pride and honor, and he carries these values to this day.

Karl Guderian wasn't original commanding officer of the RNC Friedrich Der Große, he wasn't even the second or third in command. However, as his superior died during the hardships the unlucky carrier endured, it was his initiative to assign new seniors officers aboard the Friedrich Der Große and gained the ship's command.

He was able to get it ship into the safety, and the bond forged between the exhausted and barely surviving crew allowed him to stay in his position - at least this moment.
