' Wrote:Alright, I downloaded the new drivers and now the computer goes to a black screen whenever I restart it - at the desktop. Any ideas?

edit-

let me rephrase...

I downloaded the recommended drivers from nvidia.com. I installed the drivers, and after installation the thing came up with the usual "you need to restart your computer". I clicked ok, the computer restarted

It went through the normal loading stuff, the windows xp loading bar and all that junk, but when it got to what was supposed to be my desktop - all I got was a black screen with a 1 pixel white strip across the top of the monitor. I can hear my virus scanner and yahoo messenger loading so I know my computer is still running, but I cant see anything that's going on - how am I supposed to fix it when I cant see it?

This is serious... until I get this fixed I cant use my own computer for anything. Please, help!

You downloaded the incorrect drivers for your on-board chip.

Go into the BIOS and select "Boot in safe mode on next restart" or hit F8 before the psot (beep)
It will ask you what you want to do. Boot with Windows XP OS in Safe Mode with networking.

Once you done that...Do a system restore, or un-install the bad driver. And download the compatable one. The motherboard disk should have the chipset driver for your on-board video device.

Maybe a re-install of the chipset drivers on the motherboard will help the situation.

I found this problem came and went, in its own due time. Both my computers, and my laptop both suffered from this issue, and it has happened a few times.

As mentioned above, you could have damaged your motherboard or on-board video chip operating your comuputer in extreem heat or with insufficient cooling.

I hope this helps, and you get it sorted mate:)

Cheers:cool:
