Khem's early life was full of mental abuse. This led to him becoming cold, calculative, and anti-social; despite preferring to avoid conflict and not going out of his way to inconvenience others. Khem's intelligence and innate understanding of psychology also set him apart from others. Often thinking 5-10 steps ahead, Khem was/is often called paranoid. At least until his paranoia saves his and his allies asses. This likely contributed to his becoming a technician for Ageira by the age of 16. However by age 21, Khem left the company for undisclosed reasons. He roamed Sirius for about a month before disappearing in to the Kansas system. Having returned to the Sirius sector 5 years later, Khem seeks change. To create a legacy. Having seen the corruption and vanity of the Houses, along with the existential threat of the nomads, he foresaw humanities destruction. He needed to intervene. The question was how.
