Project Stronghold - Fortitudine Expansion
Conversion of factory lines and Hangar Bays: Food production , Water and Oxygen reclamation and purification.

As Fortitudine initiates basic systems check, we would like to make a short presentation about the several upgrades to the Station mainly focussing on the Water, food and Oxygen production facilities, these were adaptations made to Lord MacRae Shipyard production lines as well its hangar bays.

In this first presentation, we’ll discover how the Station uses the process of reclamation (recycling) to meet their needs for water in space!

Why Recycle Water?

All living organisms, from the tiniest bacteria to the biggest predators, and all the plants, require water to survive. Of course, people need water, too, even when they are traveling or working in space.

Water is dense, so even a little bit of it is heavy. This makes it very expensive to transport from planets to space.

For this reason, crews, need to find ways of reusing the water that they already have. The process of recycling wastewater is also known as water reclamation. Water reclamation is vital to space travel as we know it, and is a “must” if we got people living for long periods of time on Space stations.

How Does It Work?

Fortitudne has now an entire system dedicated to recycling water for its crew aboard the station.
Basically, wastewater (dirty, used water) is captured, filtered (cleaned), and then made available to reuse. A setup that automatically continues in a cycle like this, over and over again, its called a closed-loop system.

Where does the wastewater come from?

Our bodies release water when we sweat, go to the bathroom, and even breathe. These biological byproducts are captured from the crew on the Station, passed through a filter to remove impurities and contaminants, and then used again by the crew to drink, bathe, re-hydrate dried food and supply the Bio-dome needs.

This might sound gross, but recycled water on Fortitudine is cleaner than what most of us drink on New London! In fact, the idea comes straight from nature. We’ve learned in several previous lessons that planets have their own system of reusing water, called the water cycle.

Water recycling on Fortitudine is controlled by the Environmental Control and Life Support System.
This system of machines provides both clean Oxygen and Water to Fortitudine's crew and cloned meat production.
Yes you heard well, our crews even have meat, tho cloned pieces and not live stock, even so thisis very pleasant for them as meat consumption in space is a rare thing.
The part of the system that controls water reclamation is the Water Recovery System.
This system is very efficient: it recycles up to 100 percent of fluid captured from Fortitudine's sinks, showers, toilets, Tea and Pee Bar as well as condensation from the air.

Environmental Control and Life Support System, a.k.a. bathrooms and air recycling, for the instalation are on display at the entrance of our Tea and Pee Bar

The systems went into operation in 26-02-828 A.S. (744 A.G.S.).
Until now, the Station relied on stored water that had been transported from Planet New London.
This limited the amount of time between suply runs, because once the stored water was used, the crew had to ask for more to the transporting divisions. This new system allows to hold more crew members, extends the length of time in between re-supplies, and helps keep operating costs down for Fortitudine. One of the biggest challenges to developing theis system was making equipment that could operate reliably as well as keeping the system simple enough that the crew can also conduct repairs when needed.

Again, providing water is no small part of space stations: each crew member on Fortitudine uses about a gallon of water per day to drink, prepare food, brush their teeth, wash their body, and shave.
The crew do everything they can to conserve the water that is available. "We don't use faucets onFortitudine, we use a wash cloth,” says Layne Carter, a water-processing specialist at the station (which produced the system). “It's much more efficient. If you're a crew member, you'll wet the wash cloth with a spray nozzle and then use the cloth to wash your hands."

Conclusion
You may not envy the crew members of Fortitudine (even though that reclaimed water they’re drinking is SUPER clean)…but it’s important to conserve water werever you may be.
