I think a big problem with the bomber vs capship balance is that people want bombers to be able to take out battleships in small numbers.
If 2-3 bombers are balanced against a single battelship, where does that leave other caps? Cruisers for example... they have -far- less armor and shielding than a battleship, far less firepower, and arent much more manuverable. A cruiser cant dodge supernovas like a gunboat can, so it takes the same number of hits and same damage per second as a battleship does from a bomber, without being able to survive long enough to fight back like the battleship can.
Right now cruisers are one of the most useless ship types in the game - they cant survive bomber fire but cant kill anything smaller than a gunboat or bigger than another cruiser. Even a single good gunboat pilot can easily take out a cruiser, which shouldnt be happening.
They need to be balanced respectively, with each ship class having a 'rock/paper/scissors' comparison to the others.
LF's should take out VHF's/Bombers
VHF's should take out Bombers
Bombers should take out caps
Gunboats should take out fighters/bombers
Cruisers should take out gunboats
Battleships should take out cruisers
There's only two ways to survive a bomber if you're in a capship - you either need to be a good pilot in a manuverable gunboat to dodge the supernovas, or you need to be in a battleship/dreadnaught so you can survive long enough to blast the little bugger as he tries to dodge your fire. Where does that leave cruisers? most of the cruisers in the game have only half as many turrets as battleships, use weaker turrets, have half as much armor and shielding, and only a very slight manuverability increase.
