I was planning to write that I thought long and hard about a response yet it's more short and shallow... Yet, here's my view:
PoB's are only good when they contribute something to the game inRP. A PoB that allows players to buy/sell mined commodities thereby actively contributing to keep players active is (again: in my view) a good thing and should remain. Yet, having said that, this could also be achieved at normal stations by the ones in charge with the balance and economy. The latter would involve a lot more work and effort on their part I humbly assume. The same goes for devices nowadays created on PoB's like cloaking devices and other shizzle.
As @Groshyr mentioned, "losing a POB is equal to losing a beloved pet for them." I can agree. For the simple reason that we are human.
When we put time and effort into things we like to see this pay off to our advantage. When it does we are happy (and thereby, mostly silent) yet when it does not we get upset. This has everything to do with the seed we planted in our own heads which either does or does not grow into a (money) tree. It bears down to expectations and when our expectations aren't met we display an emotion.
Coming back to Disco a few years ago I was crazy and adament about owning a PoB. And while many "Do-and-don't"-threads where already out there I (sub)contiously chose to ignore most of them. The very reason why? Something "I own" in a vast community operated game like Disco. With that thought my ego kicked in and thus I figured I could get that seed (of thought, a.k.a. a PoB) flourish into a tree. Totally ignoring the fact that not only the economy (routes, commodities, prices) changes but also disregarding the fact that player incentives, faction objectives and faction leaders change.
So, here I am. An active player and owner of a PoB which not only takes my time from doing real RP but also taking away that very bit of fun which I should actually devote to make that RP and the ingame experience for others and myself a bit better.
Suffice to say, I for one, can admit that I planted the wrong seed and been watering the wrong tree for a while now. Yet here I am still trying to keep that tree alive for there are still a few green leafs on it.
To answer the thread question: "Why do you not like player owned bases" I can only say: When a PoB does not actively support players it should simply not be there. Yet do keep in mind a PoB is the work of a player and always a personal choice. Emotions are always there, in any way, shape or form. So keep that in mind as well.
