Election Season Sweeps the Republic
New Thessalonica - Yuma: The political climate of Yuma had been awaiting the beginning of the Republic's election season with particular interest this year, as 830 marks the end of President Fiona Payne's record setting eight years in office. While Crayter law does not forbid her from running for a third independent term, President Payne announced earlier this week that her presidency would end on election day, allowing the climate to shift for the first time since the fall of Tau-44.
Since the end of November, planet-wide news outlets has been focusing on Joshua Ellis, a financier from New Galene who announced his candidacy for the presidency in early October. While far from the only candidate, Ellis has made strong claims regarding the Military's involvement in the Taus, repeatedly approving of force against Gallic vessels in Orkney, applauding the recent destruction of a Gallic proto-installation by the Bretonian Armed Forces, and speaking of the 'abundant and native resources' of the Tau-23 system. Ellis has started the season strong, with a substantial following praising his strong voice and anti-Gallic sentiment, and is expected to be one of the strongest contenders for the presidency.
Of the other candidates for the office, only Jennifer Delaney and Clark McNalen have made any moves in the political sphere.
McNalen, the Director of CDI, has touted the need for military buildup and the expansion of the armed forces, citing the loss of the Hades in late 827 and the imperialist overtures of Bretonia in the Taus. While not as vocal as Ellis, McNalen has also made some appearances, though has noted that his obligations to the workers of Sabah and the Military demand much of his attention.
Delaney, Crayter's Ambassador to the Republic of Liberty, refrained from participating in talks with CNN until the end of January. After the beginning of the election season on February 6th, however, she noted her opposition to the fighting in the Taus, and the need to delegate military matters with the Republic's allies in full, citing Liberty's alienation from any talk on the matter.
While there are certain to be more to throw their hats into the ring, this year's election season is already the most exciting since our peoples' arrival in Sirius. We will keep you up-to-date as the season progresses.
