What little of the daylight was quickly fading. The crickets were singing around them as were some frogs in the water. Having heard her explanation of what she did, he excused himself long enough to go in for beverages. He settled into his chair with a glass scotch over the rocks and offered Sonja her beverage of choice. For Niki a saucer of milk. For a moment, nothing else mattered as the sounds of night soothed him. Finally, he turned to Sonja.
"No one in the Zoner communities knows of this place," he explained. "One man, an old, very trusted friend, does know so I am guessing you somehow earned his confidence. He is a rugged old guy who is good at reading people." He took in the night sounds for a moment. "Sonja, Admete, we can stay here awhile as needed. No one knows we are here but ultimately, we will have to get back to work."
He sipped his Scotch. "I cannot think this late in the day so tomorrow we will figure out something. Caliban is still out there and ready to wreck what I have built. He will not be easy to ward off."
He had a thought. "By the way, someone sent me a message, a Minna-Dietlande Wilcke. She claim to be your mother and wanted to see your remains. As of yet, I have not replied. I mean, I should tell her something."
