As you know, the Liberty Navy has been conducting a military campaign in the Kansas and Vespucci systems against the Insurgency. According to a preliminary report from the Liberty Security Force, it is believed that members of the Insurgency have fled the ongoing military operation and found refuge on the semi-autonomous planet Erie.
The Erie government has thus far rejected demands from the Liberty government to conduct an investigation into the matter, citing provisions of the treaties signed by Liberty granting Erie jurisdiction over matters of immigration, asylum, and deportation. The Liberty government has responded by stating that granting refuge to criminals, terrorists, and enemy combatants is a direct violation of Libertonian law and the treaties.
The situation is developing rapidly, and it is unclear whether Erie will concede to Liberty's demand or whether the matter will instead be taken to court. However, it is clear that the current tensions between Erie and Liberty have the potential to escalate into a full-blown conflict.
I am writing to you today to ask for your views on the situation. As a leading scientific organization, I believe that the Consortium has a unique perspective on this issue. I am particularly interested in gauging your willingness to either support the Erie breakaway or to work with the Liberty Government to broker a peace agreement, if possible.
I would be grateful if you could provide me with your views on this matter as soon as possible so that we may effect an official response.
