Not to mention that the zoners, whose main population resides on spacestations like Freeports would be lucky to have even a few hundreds of thousands of population.

migration is also a thing too

and i'm willing to bet that there are other amenities like universities, some industries, etc. people like living on planets and it is probably considerably cheaper than running spaceports

That would be correct in an extremely oversimplified model, like some regression ignoring the complicated factors of a stochastical social model. According to sociology, in order for a non-disaster migration to take place, the destination place needs to have comparative (or absolute) advantages over the places of emigration. Erie, according to the infocard, had been deemed "undesirable" due to harsh natural conditions. Spice it up with having only 69 years from the touchdown of the first small group of zoners to 400 million ppl, and suspiciously it is implied that the majority of that population is zoners. How? Idk. Imagine a group of ppl that up to 800s (vanilla) had a few tens of thousand people max suddenly boom to hundreds of millions and achieve the population level of, say, Crete in 69 years. I doubt the growth is due to migration or natural growth (fertility in advanced societies remains fairly low). More likely it was just a whim of those who wrote the infocard. The situation is very similar to Miura that also should not sport 440 million population achieved in 50 years. I am not even touching the fact that if zoners came to settle a planet after living in space for generations with respective physiological changes, they would experience a lot of purely medical problems and be worshiping Cryer as the second Jesus. It's better never mentioning the population of these small new planets.
