Because it was built in a place where it should not be built.

What baffles me more is that people take their sweet time to write these huge posts on the forums on how the siege was bad, how the people who've sieged it are the bringers of evil and destruction to what was dear to the PoB-Owner, but not a single one of you had the idea to join up and defend it. The only person I've seen try to defend or dent the siegers more than once, ironically, was Lemon.
You've had a base sieged in the ZoI of the most active faction on the entire server, by a group that is hostile to that faction. Perhaps something could have been done to defend it, it could've brought some interaction to the region, had you done anything more than write meaningless posts that boil down to the same argument every time: "The siege was bad because RP!!!!", but ultimately, considering the lore of the Red Hessians as well as the Red Hessian Army as a faction, doing what they did makes more sense than to ask for a monthly payment or anything else.

Base Sieges can be defended, even the GMG managed to defend a PoB in Sigma-21 from the Rheinland Military, a faction with access to caps all while they didn't have them. You can talk you way out of this, but ultimately you just never made the effort to try to do anything about it. It's unfortunate that the base died, sure, but ultimately you should not blame the pirate faction in whose backyard you've decided to build an installation without properly consulting them. Man up, take arms, defend your POBs the next time.
