They have no more business being trade ships than VHFs. Arguably less.
Not everyone has Freighters kitted out for combat or even use them for combat (my mining freighters have a mining array and 1 or 2 guns to shoot the cannister after mining).
And some people do use freighters for trading (probably goes against everything PvPers expect). Why make them PvP Gods where they are designed to carry 'Freight'?
