Kusari Celebrates Cat Day!

Konnichiwa! This is Ishikawa Ayumi and you are watching "Ikiru michi" (//"Way of life") on All Honshu Network. Stay tuned today to learn about one of the most beloved holiday of Kusari - the Cat Day!

Every year on the 22nd of February Kusari pays homage to an old tradition from Sol and spends a day of festivity and fun celebrating our cute feline masters friends! In the Kusarian language, the date would be written as "二月二十日" - (ni gatsu ni jyuu ni nichi). So many "ni" sounds put together result in them often mispronounced as "nya nya nya", exactly how a cat would sound in Kusarian, hence the day for this wonderful occasion!

On this day, proud cat owners stroll outside with their graceful pets engaging in ruthless battles of good manners, looks, and the power of kawaii ("cute" - kus.). Businessmen and craftsmen of all trades try to create products and organise services themed around kitties and make some profit. Kids parade with various mascots and pet the lucky (or unlucky if the kids are too zealous in their aspiration to pet) cats to happen on their way. The felines get to enjoy the day too, everyone treating them with gourmet products reserved for this day such as slices of fatty tuna or salmon, crunchy cat treats, and even catnip. The atmosphere of joy and relaxation transforms even the usually serious and unremarkable office districts making the most stalwart salary men occasionally meow after having a few drinks or even wear some cat-inspired apparel such as neko-neckties or hats.

The leadership of the Empire does not shun joining the populace in celebration. The famous National Diet cat is treated with the best tuna from the early markets of New Tokyo and Miki gets to open the plenary Diet session with its meow. Our reporter has taken an interview with Her Excellency, Prime Minister of the Empire of Kusari Miyasu Sanae-sama.

PM Miyasu Sanae-sama What does the cat day personally mean to you? "Oh, cats have become a passion of mine since 828. Our little furball here, Miki, led all those cats into the Parliament building back then. I adopted her and she's easily the most popular member of the Parliament by now. So to me, it's a celebration of meeting our Miki here. I think many cat owners celebrate their little troublemaker too today." What do you do on the cat day?" "Politics do not rest today either. But I still try to make it a special day. We're having two cats next to Miki, Ami and Chibi, who usually stay at our estate on Honshu. For cat day, I always bring them to my office on New Tokyo and later today, we'll have a small cat-themed party among our staff. Of course, the trio will be the centre of attention again." What can the cat day tell the rest of the Houses? "To celebrate life. Cats are cute to us but chaotic by nature. They can be your best friend but also can turn your life upside down just by being themselves. To me, they are symbolic of our own complex daily life and we should cherish our joyful moments just the same way our cats cherish receiving pets."

Honshu is not lagging behind the capital. Marquise Ayaka Shimamori is known for her avid love for cats. Every year in February Shimamori family organises a cat-inspired exhibition and event at their clan castle which is held usually from mid-February till the end of the month. All businesses from Honshu are invited to contribute and participate. The luckiest SMEs get the clan's favour and investments but certainly all the businesses can enjoy the opportunity to promote their products and services during such a beloved event. This year's favour was given to a talented illustrator, Juno, who has contributed greatly to the cat spirit of this year and given us a lot of masterpieces and the Kusari mascot of 834.

Juno's kawaii nyanko became a hit. One can see a lot of sweets sold everywhere with the recognisable cat, train stations stylised with the cat images, and of course the very exhibition at Shimamori-jo. Savvy tourists who have booked a visit to Nekojima way in advance can also enjoy a spectacular festival held annually on the well-known cat island and enjoy true immersion in the world of purry furbals!
