Special Unit Stulingen

Overview

Formed after the resolution of the Rheinland Civil War in 828 A.S., the Special Unit Stulingen marks a departure from the typical MND units, solely tasked with the broad field of "Gefahrenabwehr" ("Hazard Control") to ensure the continued survival of the new, albeit fragile Rheinland state. Named after the moon of Planet Holstein where the "Holstein Accords" were signed , the "Sondereinheit Stulingen" could be understood as a symbol and desire for stability.

Due to financial constraints post the Civil War, brought together the Special Unit by recruiting from various existing units within Rheinland's lawful authorities.

What the Unit Command and MND High Command didn't anticipate was a resurgence of an issue thought to be contained - Das Wilde. In the chaos after the civil war, previously infected personnel successfully reintegrated into Rheinland's military structures. Unbeknownst to outsiders, Special Unit Stulingen, in particular, saw a high concentration of compromised individuals, hinting at Das Wilde's intention to exploit the unit's natural mobility and secrecy to exert its influence on Rheinland once again.

By the year 833 A.S., individuals among the Unit Command were subverted by the Nomad thralls and prominent figureheads such as Stabskapitänleutnant Franz Jäger and Kreuzerkapitän Erik von Strauss started to push for the sizable expansion of the Units size, citing urgent developments in the Dresden system and "risk assessments" showing "incapability of the Rheinwehr" to operate as required.

Although the unit's presence sometimes raises suspicions and tensions with regular authority units over its detached nature and overall ominous code of conduct (including all-time flight with turned off transponders), Das Wilde so far managed to avoid detection through various methods: Subjugate those who detected them, silence them permanently or even deliver their own thralls to the blade to protect mission integrity.

Internal Structure

Due to its nature as a division pieced together from various institutions, Special Unit Stulingen operates following a standard rank classification system. Although these ranks bear little meaning on the inside except for the command itself, they are actively used for identification purposes around regular Rheinland authority vessels.

Kreuzerkapitän (Cruiser Captain): The Kreuzerkapitän is the acting Direktor of the Special Unit and thus unsurprisingly a rare sight.

Korvettenkapitän (Corvette Captain): As flexibility restricts usage of warships and the main strike groups are often spearheaded by "Oder"-class Gunboats, the Korvettenkapitän represents the battlefield commander and wing leader for operations deemed crucial. Their order is absolute towards other units.

Stabskapitänleutnant (Staffcaptain Lieutenant): The highest rank of a warrant officer, the SKL fulfils similar objectives to the Corvette Captain, although for much smaller operations and general patrol duties only. Unlike the Corvette Captain's orders, SKL issued orders may be challenged by Captain Lieutenants on scene.

Kapitänleutnant (Captain Lieutenant): Serving as snub craft wing leaders or principal warfare officers on an "Oder"-class, the Captain Lieutenant represents the link between Stulingen's commanders and its swift task force units.

Oberleutnant: They are experienced pilots who are either unfit to lead, still in training to do so or simply do not wish to climb the rank ladder. The most common sight within the Unit, similar to how it is within the rest of Rheinlands military authorities. Since the Special Unit Stulingen requires capable people, only those of Oberleutnant or above ranks have been integrated, marking Oberleutnant as the entry rank of the division.
