Are you actually playing in MP? Multiplayer you start with kestrel freighter which is great for making starter cash. I feel you played singleplayer which is sandbox with several 'cheat' commands - it only serves to test the ships you want to fly.
Flying SP you also lack many features of Discovery since they are ran server-side.
Yes Discovery is multiplayer-oriented mod.

I started with a Starflyer and an empty cargo hold.
