You may do everything correctly, or "right" and your base may still end up being attacked. I guess there's a luck aspect to it aswell.
This is a big takeaway - when you're dealing with other characters handled by other players, there's always an inherent risk (and fun) from the chaos of who you might be interacting with. Everyone has their motivations and expectations, and there's no certainty that these will not be mutually exclusive to your own. Navigating this might be through diplomacy and some bribery, but there's always the chance that when things devolve to violence, you're not the one getting your way.
With everything else involving people, it's not a formula and humans aren't finite state machines to be "scripted" in such a way.
