If they truly came at the same time or not, Liberty arrived in 1 A.S and if we take by example that AIs arrived at the same time as the Liberty sleeper ship, 833 years has been passed. Technically, AIs developed ways to build other AIs.
Not entirely sure I understand. The Sleeper Ship program was a Western Alliance (ie human) undertaking, so if they launched the probes, well, there's the Gammu origin. The details on it, like whether these are Von Neumann probes by design (fools! haven't they seen any science fiction??), or the AI developing to their current state as a result of some other outside circumstance, is probably intentionally left to the creativity of the faction's roleplayers. The influence of certain things in Kappa is absolutely implied, but never stated concretely far as I saw. Attentive folks can put things together, and that can reflect a little in the roleplay for them.
As for their limited presence and stuff in game, they are a niche faction. One of my favorite mentions of the AI in any info card in the game is Primus Outpost's mention of the AI not having the same kind of military commitment to liberating their homeworld as the Technocracy, to their frustration. Whatever the OOC circumstances of losing their big base, I love that line because it reminds us that AI Do Not Think Like Humans. We don't know their priorities, but losing their adopted homeworld apparantly didn't stress them out too much. Who knows, maybe they have other branches off in deep space. A 200 year exodus isn't really a big deal to a sentient machine, more than likely. They are alien because it's hard to grasp what they really value or how their cognition works, but they don't have overt ill will towards humans, and that's cool.
I guess it'd be neat if they had some dedicated AI mining ship, since they're as bound to resource availability as humans are, but they don't really need it to work. They're a roleplay heavy story based faction. Playing the game of power and territory isn't really their thing outside of self defense, I don't think. It's all about making cool interactions with these guys.
