Single Player troubles

I created an account just so I could chime in on this subject.

Using Discovery 4.80 and nothing else.

I am playing the story mission "Expose The Traitor" where you have to escort / protect the convoy carrying artifacts to Research Station Willard.

My problem begins after the convoy strikes a mine and comes under attack by Outcast fighters. This is an incredibly difficult fight. I have attempted it at least a dozen times and I have not succeeded yet. The best I have done is to kill all but about four enemies. Sometimes the convoy is destroyed by the attackers within only a few minutes because I don't take the enemies out fast enough. (Like I said, it is very difficult.) But most of the time I am the one being destroyed. I totally get raped over and over again. I am using missiles and mines and batteries like crazy, but I just can't win.

I was really getting into the game, and enjoying the Discovery mod, but this has stopped my game cold and I am getting really frustrated. I refuse to use cheats because it would ruin it for me.... and I really don't want to start over with the mod uninstalled.

Has anyone else had trouble with this mission??
