History

The neon signage of the "Sirius Sector Savings & Exchange," a glitzy newcomer that huddled in the functional docking ring of Freeport 26, vibrated with pent-up energy. Outside, within the sea of traders and the low hum of encrypted data streams, sat Anya Sharma — former Interspace Commerce (IC) risk assessor with a chip on her shoulder and a radical new dream for Sirius' future finances.

Anya remembered clearly the establishment of IC: once a strong money giant to be proud of, financing the very Trade Lanes connecting the stars. But after the ruining defaults by Kusari and Rheinland in 521 AS, and Liberty's adamant refusal to honor repayment, IC had to adapt — from financiers to insurers.
Anya had always felt that something was lost in this shift: the hutzpah of investment, of real exchange. She wanted to return it, and Sirius Sector Savings & Exchange was her first attempt.

Her new business, at first, wasn't connected to IC — not technically, anyway. But it silently drew some of IC's disillusioned engineers, who pined for the high-finance youth of their time and not for the actuarial drudgery they now performed. And with their help, Anya's beta-stage but fulfilling platform allowed corporations — even unconventional, grey-market operators — to list and trade tailored financial instruments. It also facilitated covert banking for those not graciously accepted in House-associated institutions.

Obtaining classic corporate listings was a Herculean undertaking. Old Liberty companies, afraid of IC's lingering influence and risks of a rogue exchange, hesitated. Anya's momentum earlier instead came from financing independent miners within the asteroid belts surrounding Hudson and Bering, which IC had formerly deemed too risky to approach.

Recognizing the need for new products, Anya launched Participation Certificates and Trade Flow Derivatives — products that enable investors to invest in trade corridors, mining expeditions, or covered cargo movement rather than outright equity purchase.
- Resource Participation Notes permit investors to profit from mining opportunities within lawless sectors like Omega-7, which are rich in precious metals but poorly guarded by Rheinland's extended military.
- Security Performance Bonds made returns contingent upon secure, timely delivery of high-risk freight via pirate-plagued space.

This drew her commerce in to become a sanctuary for high-reward, high-risk investment — and a refuge for those who are marginalized by conventional finance. Groups such as Outer Rim Ventures, with rumored ties to Lane Hackers and Rogues, were some of the early clients.
Even organizations like the Golden Chrysanthemums, tolerated by IC in Kusari for their largely political grievances, covertly experimented with any potential use of Anya's platform for more advanced financial operations.

Anya wasn't oblivious to the threat. IC's USI tracking technology, developed in collaboration with Ageira, posed a permanent threat to organizations that operated outside the bounds of the law. But she also perceived an increasing market: old finance was rigid and self-contained, with space for the ambitious.

As Lane Hacker raids expanded across Liberty, now threatening stabilized trade routes, Anya's Exchange was more vital than ever. Investors flocked to new vehicles like Security Innovation Derivatives, betting on companies developing counter-piracy technologies and alternate trade lanes.

At the same time, smaller shipping firms practicing Kusari-Liberty trade, apprehensive but pragmatic, began to use Anya's services for insurance and finance.
And over time, what was initially a marginal platform came to evolve — not through means of conventional stock listings, but through the development of an environment for ventures, trade flows, and security innovations too volatile for House-sanctioned exchanges.

As time passed, even sentiment regarding Interspace Commerce itself found itself a factor in Anya's market. Speculators wagered on the success of IC and its subsidiaries based on round-the-clock Lane Hacker activity and interference in trade.

The course of events changed when Jennifer Gale, IC's CEO, got in touch.

Instead of destroying Anya's business, Jennifer offered a broad deal: a merger that would leverage IC's immense presence and credibility with the energetic, risk-taking platform Anya created.
The consequences were profound. The majority of Anya's more. informal services would now be forced to be cleaned up under stricter regulation. But at the same time, her business model would gain the muscle and infrastructure it needed to become outright sector-wide.

And with the merger, the Sirius Sector Savings & Exchange evolved — formalized, legitimized, and rebranded as the Interspace Commerce Exchange.

She stood at the sweep of Freeport 26's panoramic windows, gazing out at transports threading between stars. She understood the power balance of Sirius was beginning to change, and she'd done her part by nudging it along. Jennifer Gale might consider her a risk-taker, even a menace — but she saw Anya's worth too.

The Interspace Commerce Exchange was now business as usual: the product of rebellion, risk, and ambition, now strengthened to the power of an empire.

The future of finance in Sirius would no longer rest in the hands of the old powers.
The game had changed — and Anya Sharma was prepared to play it her way.
