All I can say is this: If you want to try a too fancy RP the better thing is to give a heads up to the people you want to involve in it. You don't have to spoil the whole thing, but just politely ask: "//Hey, I want to do something different in terms of RP. Would you like to play along?" If they say yes, it means that they'll pay more attention to where you're going.

To be honest with you, New York is not the best place to try this. There's too much chatter there most of the time, people tend to ignore it some. I know my attention is selective there. I just notice things when either people are talking to me directly or there's some kind of warning. Chances are your RPing was largely ignored. Not out of rudeness, but it got lost along the rest of the communications.

So, next time try contacting the leading person and talk to them. They'll be able to keep the rest of his pilots at bay while you go about your story. Not only that, if you're going about powerplaying (changing the interpretation of game events for other people) you will need their consent.
