To be honest I think the players online thing needs to go anyway.

It seems to have become a bit of a (bad) habit to sit there and watch that for someone appearing in game. There have been a few cases in recent memory where I've been on a particular ship and no less than five minutes after logging in I've found myself being forced into a PvP encounter because the opposing players know exactly where I am. The whole raidlog mentality needs to end in my opinion, it is actually boring. This is coming from a player who actually runs joining messages off so its a bit more of a surprise at least. Though as a result the above grows tedious after the second or third occasion. I suppose the tldr is, I'd rather have more random encounters whether it is PvP or not than a raidlog due to a bot pinging that my tag has appeared somewhere.

If you absolutely must show players in game (or player count), it should not show which system they are in. Region only at the very most, as was suggested by someone else in this thread. Though preferably no location at all. In game it should show region only in my opinion so now you've got to actually log in to see a region where you can look for an encounter. You might stumble across someone else entirely as a result, that kind of random interaction is something that is missing these days. I don't think player tracking is going to improve things at all. Just my two cents I suppose.
