After Action Report: - 03/03/836 A.S
Today I personally conducted a patrol through Pennsylvania aboard LNS Phoenix. The route from West Point to my patrol path within Pennsylvania resulted in a few skirmishes with Rogue pilots within the system. Although nothing particularly out of the ordinary for that time of day. My patrol was sought to run a shakedown trial of Phoenix and to iron out any possible operational issues, I sought to oversee this personally.
However after expending some of our ammunition stores to reserve level, I opted to return to Norfolk at this stage to resupply and debrief with the maintenance specialists on what was learned. Unfortunately on exiting the Jump Gate into New York, we were set upon by initially two Outcasts by the names of Chenzo and Diego. Two very heavy fighters. Knowing I was likely about to be swarmed, my initial tactic was relatively passive. I needed to stall for time to plot a route through the Badlands to reach West Point, knowing I'd need to do this with a relative bearing only due to local interference.
After a few more moments of listening to the exterior chatter, my radar operator indicated to me we had yet another contact on the scope. Yet another Outcast strike craft of the fighter variety. This time named D.I.E.OTAN. This one didn't seem all that interested in chatting, unsurprisingly, and immediately declared its intent to open fire, to which it did. Although one alone was no threat to Phoenix and her shielding. However this fell within my prediction, we had been cornered in a hostile environment against agile fighter craft, largely able to out manoeuvre our heavier armaments.
A few moments more passed and the two other fighter craft decided to break an attack. At this stage I ordered my helmsmen all ahead flank into the Badlands, at the same time I had my CIC return fire aft with every point defence gun and flak battery that could be brought to bear. From then on we fought a very tight running gun battle through the asteroids within the Badlands, trying to keep the fighter craft from landing hits. Unfortunately after enough sustained fire, our shielding failed, however the armour astern was holding. I ordered to continue rapid fire and maintain speed. Our advantage was the Interdictors speed in this particular engagement.
Once we finally cleared the Badlands, West Point was off to our port bow, at which stage an Outcast Gunship named Santiago Salvador appeared off our starboard beam, again it declared its intent to attack. Now we were clear of the Badlands I raised a call for reinforcements, as the fast attacking craft were starting to overwhelm our point defence guns and our munition stocks were nearly dry. One vessel, D.I.E.OTAN which we severely damaged with our heavy battery earlier in the engagement, had withdrawn and at this point had returned to attack us. I decided to make a stand and started rapid combat manoeuvres which landed several heavy blows to the attacking gunship, our flak batteries continued to suppress the fighter craft.
Though to my relief, Lieutenant Amelia Hale soon arrived on the scene. She signalled the bridge and I responded that we needed assistance fighting off the strike craft, Amelia opened the attack despite essentially being outnumbered three to one. I ordered my helmsman to run at the Gunship to drive it off now that Amelia had forced an opening in their attack. We exchanged fire with this craft until finally Phoenix' heavy battery destroyed the gunship. I then ordered the point defence guns to attempt to cover the Lieutenant, by which stage 46th pilot Callum Hayes had arrived to assist her.
By this late stage in the combat, with critical munition levels and being rendered combat ineffective by the more nimble fighters, I stood our guns down in fear of friendly fire. Unfortunately Amelia was forced to eject due to suffering extensive damage in her heroic attempts to defend the Phoenix, including inflicting considerable damage during a pass at the gunship. I can confirm we recovered her escape pod and returned her safely to West Point after the action was concluded. My personal observation is that her bravery considering the odds was outstanding, she has truly upheld the standards of First Fleet within this action.
Three hostile contacts were neutralised, the final two fighters were taken down by Hayes. The fourth, Diego, appeared to scarper as the third Outcast pilot was shot out of the sky. I'll detail their callsigns and classes below. The action commenced at 23:00 hours and lasted until 23:38 hours on 02/03/836. Phoenix has returned to Norfolk to re-arm and repair.
