I can see the justification for one of these things, but not the other.

Fine. You can go. But it will not be in an official capacity. You will not be "accompanying" Bancroft or getting involved in his work there. You will simply watch, enjoy the festivities, and return. This much is non-negotiable. Let the man do what he's been trained to do without bother.
