Heya!

Like @Lolipop12 said, interacting with people and weaving your own story/stories for your character/characters is a better way than just trading or doing missions. You can write solo on the forum, or interact in-game, and roleplay with whoever you find on the way, even from hostile factions, or you can write about again, like @Lolipop12 said, say, an IMG pilot who is struggling for cash, writing about his ship, his crew, his goals, and so on. Basic but solid foundations, that you can weave into more and more complex story or stories. Then, even contact other factions and/or people on the forums (the comms thingy), and get them to, I dunno, refurbish your ship, acquire certain things (that might not exist in-game, but purely for roleplay) and so on. There's a lot you can do.
