To answer your question, yes it can be done (in all versions & Mods) the way it is done is by using Ioncross (or whatever server management tool) and editing the ship. See the way the server handles things like that is it stores a player file for you, in this player file it stores things

Cargo
Loadout
Proper light loadouts for this ship
ID Info for the ship so your PC know which one to use
Costume
The light loadouts are just one of a few things you can change in the player file in Ioncross, it's how they add police lights to server police units.
Personally I wouldn't mind having all my characters changed to a corsair outfit (which is editable, but Ioncross doesn't "let" you do it) but it's only editable from the server.
@ Igiss, that reminds me of an idea I had, for the costume choosing device, instead of setting the costume the traditional way, why not have it completely replace trents normal outfit (Like replace the files completely) so it gives the outfit you want online instead of the default one or the one the server admin picked out. Would be kinda cool IMO.
