i think i remember that the reason they don t die when they are at zero is that they attempt to play a death animation - which can take some time ( like the osiris that breaks into 3 parts but only really blows up when the middle part explodes )

the problem with such an effect is.... the longer it takes the more damage the dieing ship can deal while being invincible. - cause during the death animation, they can still fire all their functioning weapons still.
