It's been an interesting thread. I'm personally of the opinion that character creation happens three ways, two internal one external.

1) Characters are inspired by the writer's personality
2) Characters are created to be the opposite of the writer's personality (escapism)
3) Characters are inspired by idols/other external influences

That might be oversimplifying it a little, but my opinion has not changed.

As far as my jab at multiple personality disorder, I'm of the opinion that as a writer gets better, they'll lean more towards it as a result of getting into so many different heads. I don't know if it's an inevitability if you write too much, but it's a thought that entertains me.

edit: Oh, and as for me personally, I make the most use of 1.
