Many of the faction leaders simply have not shown leadership.

Name one. That's all I ask, name a single person who is currently the head of an official faction who you believe is not fit for the job, and give reasons why.

That's a possibility, but in most cases if you really dislike the person running the faction, it's because they've denied you access to the faction or it's territories in the past - and generally with good reason.

d) you have something in mind that doesn't mesh well with - but doesn't conflict with - the established factions (for example, an Outcast working primarily in Bretonia or Liberty has no factions to join)

That shouldnt impact your decision. I see factionalized people in odd areas all the time - hell, I saw an [LN] in omicron gamma the other day. for the most part, the 101st, RoS, or SoB (especially SOB) shouldnt care if you decide to operate in an area such as bretonia or rheinland - but you're likely going to be operating on your own most of the time.

True, but then there isnt anyone to regulate how you play, so the entire argument that this thread presents is void.
