Actually, I see a lot of indies forming groups. Most of the groups i see online are indies.

Actually I see factions in groups far more often for pvp, but you miss the point, how is a cap ship supposed to assure he has fighter escorts wherever he goes? I'm often alone in systems, and unless I want to play only in NY or in Sig 13 then it's pretty difficult to find a couple merc or friendly fighters around.
