After months of rigorous training, he was assigned to his first mission, effectively given the chance to prove himself.
He, along with several Nyxes of his superior officers and 2 magnificent Zephyr Carriers, went on an attack mission against the Outcast pirates in Sigma-13..
But, the asteroid fields in the systems before Sigma13 were packed with enemies, and that slowed the mission significantly.
When they were at the jumphole, all ships jumped, only the Rubicon was caught up with by 3 Outcast destroyers, and unfortunately stuck in the asteroids.
The destroyers pounded on the battlestar mercilessly, but the young ensign was determined on freeing it from it's shackles and impending doom.

He fired everything he had all over the asteroids, and was pretty close to freeing the Rubicon, but it got severely crippled because of the overwhelming force of three capital ships. The rest of the fleet, also crippled by another attack in sigma 13, began their retreat. Had they been together they might have even won, but separated they stood no chance. So the retreat was sounded. Once they jumped back, they found the aforementioned situation, and opened fire on the destroyers. The Outcasts had to stop firing at the Rubicon because of the new danger. 2 of the destroyers got blown up and the third retreated. However, in the meantime 3 bombers were trying to destroy the Zephyrs, whose turrets were not fast enough to destroy them.

The ensign turned on the bombers and prevented them from firing their deadly supernova torpedoes at the Zephyrs. He fought them bravely and mercilessly, and eventually destroyed 2 but got severely damaged. His fin was burning and almost fell off, but he managed to dock somewhat violently in the Nyx docking bay.

And so, a partial victory had still been achieved. With 2 caps destroyed, one crippled, and 2 bombers down the Outcasts retreated.
The attack group headed back home, severely damaged but still in one piece.
Back at Tau-44, in the Rubicon lounge, Ensign Swift was congratulated for his brave and heroic conduct in the battle, and had free drinks all night.

One of his viper colleagues suggested a callsign for him. It was Flamewing, because of his near death in the battle, his burning fin in particular. And from that point on, he was known as ensign Flamewing of the Colonial Remnant.
