Perhaps the Australis (or Australasia) system could be on the other side of Sirius to Bretonian Space. According to the canon, the Bret sleeper ship arrived later, and took up residence in the (comparatively) mineral-poor areas around the barrier nebula. Would they not have aped their forefathers and gone out to explore, and claimed a system rich in natural resources on the other side of space?

This would add a lot of RP - imagine that traders have to get from the other side of rheinlandb/Kusari/whatever, bringing their cargo back across to Bretonia, prey to all the pirates.

The diplomacy would have to be re-written, so that the traders could either be protected by bret lawfuls in the other houses' space (i.e. escorting bret traders allowed), or the Bret traders would be able to call on the RM/LSF/whoever to protect them, or spark an episode of escalating tensions between the houses....
