In response to what Shipper's said, the fact that the gentleman's rule for declaring combat has become a hard in fast rule...well, its forcing things, if you assume you have to talk to the person you're engaging, but one could suggest that rather than talking to the target, you could call for help, and then jump in, talk to someone else, etc. You don't have to be talking to them, you just have to say something to the effect that they're about to fight you.

Even then, I would suspect, if it were possible to regulate such things as warning shots, those would be acceptable. Shots to make them aware that you are engaging...The whole rule seems silly, from an RP standpoint, but its not an RP rule. Its a "be decent to other players" rule.
